Climate Change Mitigation Project 2020

Climate Change Mitigation Project 2020

In November 2019 a large Beech tree was felled on Ferndene site, the 99 year old tree had become a risk to the hospital due to its structural condition and proximity. Normally the wood would have been removed from site and burnt as firewood, this action would release the carbon stored in the tree back into the atmosphere adding to climate change. To stop the carbon returning to the atmosphere we decided to research Beech wood and identify projects that we could make to sequester the carbon.

The young people at Ferndene have been making and selling solid Beech chopping boards and reptile bedding as part of their enterprise studies.
